My husband lived in NYC for 5 years and the Cloisters were one of his favorite places. He can’t wait to take me there when we go for our first anniversary in May. Having been once to the city myself I resound with much of what you’re saying, especially about the energy & life, but not necessarily the joy. There is something extremely attractive and yet subtly daunting about that place. Looking forward to more blogs & pics!

Jeff – This is a beautiful idea. I’ve oft retreated to the quiet within as a means of survival in difficult times. But in this context – the noisy, fast-pace of metropolitan life – I’ve never really thought of “carry it with me.” It’s true, like water carried in a canteen when we cross the desert, we need to carry our own quiet if for no other reason than to stop and be refreshed while on the journey. Thank you for this gift.

Your pictures and description make me want to go back in a bad way. I haven’t been since 1997. My niece is living there now, a graphic designer working for Ralph Lauren. I’ve always wanted to visit the Cloisters. Next time I go, it’s at the top of the list.

Jeff–you had him down — that was just like he was in those years. By the way, I was the history teacher for that humanities class that we team taught. It was a great experience getting to be with him every day. I learned from him too–he was a thoughtful and caring friend.
I’m glad to see you doing well. Thanks for your beautiful tribute. You would have made him proud.

Thank you for the beautiful tribute to a dear friend. The loss of his Wes-ness has certainly left a void at Woodson, where he was teaching at the time of his death.

I was a good friend of Wes. I worked with him, and then I retired, but I have been substituting for him for several weeks. I am going to finish out this semester. I loved what you said about him, and it made me sad. I’m so happy that you can’t see his family now. I could hardly recognize them from your description.

You suggested last year that we choose a single word or command from Jesus to challenge us for the coming year. I chose, “Judge not.” Thank you for the reminder. This year the word is “relationship”. What does it mean and how do I achieve meaningful relationships? I think you are suggesting a challenging place to start. God bless.
